England 12/08/2013 – Visitors to the 2013 Commercial Vehicles show flocked to the Kirby Tyres stand who were showcasing Double Coin tyres.
They did so because they were trying to solve the age-old problem of finding high quality commercial truck tyresthat were built to last, yet were not prohibitively expensive. For UK hauliers, the last decade has been extremely difficult.
Even before the recession, many UK hauliers were struggling to stay in business. They were suffering from increased regulation of their industry, which, was resulting in significant additional overheads. In addition, they had to cope with rising labour costs, higher fuel overheads and increasing competition from European hauliers. Unfortunately, these sustained pressures were too much for many of the UK’s smaller hauliers, most of those that had been trading since the 1940 and 50s, went out of business during the noughties.
Those that remain have had to adapt and radically change their business model to cope with the demands of modern distribution. However, many of the problems they faced in the past decade are still there and the pressures onthem are continuing to increase. Therefore, UK hauliers are constantly looking for ways to reduce their overheads.
Hauliers need the ability to get old tyres re-treaded
The cost of tyres represents a significant percentage of the maintenance cost of a truck. Therefore, the Kirkby Tyrestrade stand at this year’s CV exhibition generated a lot of interest. Theyhave been distributing Double Coin agricultural and truck tyres, in the UK, for the past 20 years. However, it has taken a while for the brand to become known and trusted. Today, the fact that the purchase price of most Double Chain tyres is so low, and that most models are specifically designed to be re-moulded is tempting new companies to try the brand. The ability to retread commercial truck tyres allows hauliers to get more use out of each tyre and therefore save a significant amount of money. Using these kinds of tyres goes a long way towards allowing them to keep their overheads low enough to compete. Because of this fact, interest in this brand can only grow.
