It has been revealed that Google recently paid for video advertising to promote their Chrome browser, and as part of this advertising campaign, several sponsored blog posts were published across the web. Investigation of these blogs revealed that the majority showed a Google Chrome video without actually linking to Google Chrome, therefore not violating their own guidelines relating to paying for links. However, they did find one blog post that linked directly to Google Chrome in a way that passed PageRank, consequently violating their quality guidelines. The webspam team at Google have taken the decision to manually demote the Chrome homepage for 60 days in the SERPs, similarly to how it would treat other websites that violate their quality guidelines.
