Cheshire, United Kingdom (5th July, 2012) – dayinsure, a leading online provider of temporary insurance for cars, vans and motorhomes in the UK, comments on recent test results which suggest considerable discrepancies between the MPG (miles per gallon) of vehicles whilst on the road, and in laboratory tests.
According to an independent analysis of UK and European cars conducted by the International Council on Clean Transportation, the difference between lab and on-the-road MPG figures has grown from 8% in 2001 to 21% in 2010.
Pete Mock, senior researcher at the non-profit organisation, believes that although a large percentage of the MPG variation is due to different driving styles, this does not entirely explain the discrepancy.
At a recent low-carbon car conference, he commented: “Everyone is driving differently, but if you look at a great number of people and a great number of cars and take an average of these figures, there is a very clear trend that supports that an increase has occurred – especially since 2007 and 2008.”
Chas Hallet, the editor-in-chief of What Car? Magazine, has also noted an MPG variation for supposed eco-friendly vehicles. He commented: “One theme that is emerging is that lots of cars that are designed to have eco credentials are performing worse than the average. We find that these cars are performing well around town, but the economy falls apart when you take them on the motorway or at higher speeds.”
Paul Everritt, the chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, explained that the laboratory tests are not designed to present precise figures for each driver. He explained: “The data as it is presented is never intended to provide people with an indication of what each and every one of their real world driving miles per gallon is going to be. What it seeks to provide – and why the European commission and national governments requires us to publish it – is some kind of comparative guide.”
