Vocera Nurse Call Integration at Moyne Health Services Improves Aged Care

Vocera Communications, Inc. (NYSE: VCRA), the leading provider of integrated, intelligent communication solutions for mission-critical mobile environments, today announced that the implementation of its Vocera Communication System with nurse call integration at Moyne Health Services (MHS) in Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia has been awarded the Aged Care IT Award. The Aged Care IT Awards, presented by the Aged Care IT Council and Aged and Community Services Australia, recognize organizations that use information technology to improve business and health outcomes in the Australian aged and community care environment. The council selected MHS for the impact its Vocera implementation has had on communication, efficiency and experience of staff and residents.

Prior to implementing Vocera in 2013, MHS used pagers to route nurse calls, which led to an inefficient use of staff time as nurses were forced to make frequent trips back and forth to resident rooms to determine and address requests. With Vocera, nurse calls are sent directly to the nurse responsible for the patient or resident via their Vocera device. This has led to an estimated 30 percent reduction in response time, as staff members can communicate more quickly with residents. As a result, resident anxiety and experience has improved.

“The staff has found that Vocera improves their workflow by enabling direct communication with residents as well as doctors,” said Leigh Parker, corporate support services executive director at Moyne Health Services. “There have been so many qualitative outcomes of the project including an improved sense of wellbeing and peace-of-mind for aged care residents, as well as improved staff morale.”

With a 15-bed acute care hospital and an 82-bed aged care facility, the expansive layout of MHS’ campus makes it difficult for staff to communicate effectively. Vocera has saved an enormous amount of time as staff members no longer need to physically search the campus for another member. In addition to improving staff efficiencies, Vocera has reduced maintenance and repair costs associated with the facility’s previous nurse call system.

“As Victoria’s oldest rural health service, we are thrilled to receive this award for our implementation of Vocera technology with nurse call,” said David Lee, chief executive officer of Moyne Health Services. “The project has really made a difference in how we operate on a day-to-day basis. Furthermore, this win demonstrates just how much a small, regional healthcare service can achieve despite limited resources.”

“Vocera is honored to receive recognition in the aged care community for our communication system,” said David Hurley, region vice president, Asia Pacific for Vocera. “We worked closely with Moyne Health Services to provide an innovative technology that would make a real difference in the delivery and experience of care, and we are pleased that the organization has seen such tremendous results.”

The Aged Care Information Technology award was presented to MHS at the 7th Annual Information Technology in Aged Care Conference in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia on July 22, 2014.
